Thomas A. O'Neil, Jr.

Thomas A. O'Neil, Jr. of Cranford NJ passed away peacefully on Saturday October 7, 2017 at the NJ Fireman's Home in Boonton, NJ. He was born at home in New Philadelphia, PA on May 12, 1938 to Thomas A. O'Neil Sr., and Josephine (Elinausky) O'Neil. Thomas is survived by brothers Joseph O'Neil (wife Marianne) and Richard O'Neil (wife Rose), and sisters Kathy O'Neil Frolich (husband Daniel), Eileen O'Neil and Patricia O'Neil Sobieski (husband John). Predeceased by sister Margaret O'Neil. He was married to Clair Kummer O'Neil for 33 years of which he was blessed with five children: Patrick O'Neil (wife Amy), Maureen Newton (husband Brett), Teresa Sherman (husband Glen), Sharon O'Neil and Thomas A. O'Neil III. He was also doubly blessed by his six grandchildren Liam, Madison, Jacob, Jeremy, James and Abigail.

Tom graduated from Linden High School in 1957. He served in the Army National Guard. He was a Cranford Fireman for 25 years and was most proud of the time he served his fellow firemen as a labor negotiator for the State of NJ Fireman's Mutual Benevolent Association. After his retirement, he enjoyed gardening, telling jokes and above all spending time with his family. His greatest gift to us all was his sincerity, generosity and unwavering sense of humor.

Visitation and Life Celebration will be on Friday from 4 to 8 pm at Gray Memorial Funeral Home, 12 Springfield Avenue in Cranford. A mass of Christian Burial will be for family and friends, 9:30 am Saturday October 14, 2017 at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Cranford. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in memory of Tom be made to the NJ Fireman's Home, 565 Lathrop Avenue, Boonton, NJ 07005.
