Richard M. Meyers

June 7, 1933 — December 22, 2014

Richard (Dick) Meyers age 81, of Ocean City, NJ formerly of Cranford, NJ, passed into Heaven peacefully on December 22, 2014.

Dick was a member of Cranford United Methodist Church in Cranford, singing in the choir, and holding many offices at the church, in addition to volunteering and cooking for Plainfield Free Meals. He also was an associate member of Saint Peter's United Methodist Church in Ocean City, NJ.

Remembering him with unending love are his wife, Lois, his daughter Beth Grant (Chris), his son Dave (Christina), his grandson Kieran Grant, his brothers Russell, Roy and Ronald and many dear friends.

Dick was employed by Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill where he constructed prototypes of leading edge technology devices, being especially proud of his role in Telstar, the first active relay satellite. His military service was as an electronics technician in the Army. After AT&T's divestiture, he worked for Bell Communications Research in space management and personnel planning until his retirement.

For over 50 years, Dick taught American heritage dancing, contra dancing and square dancing. This led to research on dance history and the formation of several dance groups, including dancers representing the Colonial period. He created and led programs which were presented for historical societies, museums and the National Park Service. Dick also participated in dance conventions throughout the US and Canada and was the featured artist on instructional square dance albums and CDs.

A Memorial Service will be held on January 31, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Cranford United Methodist Church, 201 Lincoln Avenue East, Cranford, NJ. Memorial gifts to Cranford United Methodist Church Memorial Fund 201 Lincoln Ave. East, Cranford, NJ 07016 or to the United Methodist Homes Foundation, 3311 State Route 33, Neptune, NJ 07753 would be greatly appreciated.
