Ramon Lago

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ramon Lago on April 5, 2026 at the age of 94.

Ramon was born in Spain and spent his late teens and early twenties in Cuba, experiences that shaped the richness of his character and the depth of his spirit. Among the many milestones of his well‑lived life, one of the greatest was when he and his beloved wife, Carmen, immigrated to the United States in 1957. With immense pride, they became American citizens, embracing the country they would forever call home.Ramon was a remarkable man—devoted, selfless, and tireless in his efforts to provide a beautiful life for his wife and their only child. He lived in Bayonne for 63 years before moving to Cranford in 2020 to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren, who were the center of his world. Last year, the arrival of his great‑granddaughter, Isabel, filled his heart with even more joy.A passionate sports fan, Ramon especially loved watching the Yankees. If you made plans with him, you always checked the Yankee schedule first—because game time was sacred. When the Yankees weren’t playing, you could find him cheering on the Giants, the Knicks, Seton Hall basketball, or the Rangers. He also had a lifelong love of horse racing, spending countless days at the track alongside his brother—some of their happiest moments were shared there.Ramon was the beloved husband of 69 years to Carmen, and the loving father of Marta Richardson and his son-in-law Paul Richardson. He was the cherished grandfather of Paul Richardson and Christina Derda and her husband, Ben, and the proud great‑grandfather of little Isabel. He is also survived by his dear sister‑in‑law and cousin, Florentina Lago; her children, Rose Garda and her husband, Larry, and their son, Joseph; as well as Pepe Lago and his wife, Debbie, and their daughters, Jessica Ramirez and her husband, Manny, and Victoria Boscia and her husband, Tyler. He was the beloved cousin of Caridad Forte, and he held a special place in his heart for his bonus niece, Ileana Pisauro, her husband, Joe, and their sons, Joseph and his wife, Shaena, and Daniel.Visitations will be held on Thursday, April 9th at Gray Memorial Funeral Home in Cranford from 5pm-8pm. A Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 10th at St. Michael’s Church in Cranford at 10am.
