Judith A. St. George

February 26, 1931 — June 10, 2015

On June 10, 2015 Judith Alexander St. George passed away peacefully in Bloomfield, Ct with her husband at her side. Judith was 84 years old. Judith was born on February 26, 1931 in Westfield, NJ. Raised during the Great Depression, she found an early refuge in reading which was a lifelong passion. Judith graduated from Smith College in 1952, where she wrote and was an editor of the college humor magazine the Campus Cat. She was married June 5, 1954 to David St. George. Their first home was the historic Longfellow House in Cambridge, MA, the headquarters of George Washington during the first year of the American Revolution. That experience triggered her life long passion for American history.

After years of raising her 4 children, she took out her college typewriter and began to write. In 1970, Judith published her first book, Turncoat Winter; Rebel Spring, a historical fiction set during the Revolutionary war. This would be the beginning of a prolific career publishing more than 40 children/young adult books on topics including great engineering feats, mysteries, and history. Her reputation as a meticulous researcher and excellent storyteller earned her a number of awards including an American Book Award Honor Book in 1983, the New York Academy of Sciences Award, a Christopher Award in 1985, and the Golden Kite Award in 1990. In 2001, her book So You Want to be President was awarded the Caldecott Medal.

Judith was also a popular speaker and shared her love of books by teaching workshops, hosting story hours, and leading reading programs for children. She represented the state of New Jersey as a delegate to the White House Conference on Library and Informational Services and to the Council of State Libraries in the Northeast. She served as a member of the Brooklyn Bridge Centennial Commission, and as chairperson of its Educational Committee. She was a member of the Author's Guild, and Mystery Writers of America. Judith continued to write into her 80's.

Judith was a loving mother and wife. She will be missed by her husband of 61 years, David St. George; her children Peter St. George: James St. George; Philip St. George; and Sarah St. George; and 5 grandchildren.
