John J. "Johnny" Diaz

John J Diaz, (84), of Westfield, NJ passed away on January 31, 2023.
John, fondly known as Johnny, was born to Rogelio and Consuelo Diaz, on March 12, 1938, in New York City, NY. He was a talented athlete who loved playing sports and received varsity letters at Westfield High School for Football & Basketball. His love of sports continued throughout his life. He coached basketball at Holy Trinity School, refereed for football and basketball, and umpired numerous baseball games.
After serving with the Army in Korea, he became a Letter Carrier with the Westfield Post Office. An integral part of the NALC Local 1492, he served several years on the union's board as an officer including the role of president. Known as John "the Whistling Mailman", he delivered along Dudley and Lawrence Avenues and could always be counted on for a wave hello to anyone passing by. After 23 years, he retired. He was a Gold Member with 50 years or more with the NALC at his passing.
John is survived by his children, Catherine (Kevin), Carin (Louis), Christine (Mark), and Thomas (Pam), 16 grandchildren, and a great-grandson. He is also survived by his sisters, Mine (Don), Idabelle Diaz & Jeanette, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, Rogelio and Consuelo, brother, Rogelio "Boopie", brother-in-law, Stanley, niece, Donna & nephew, Jack.
Aside from his love for family and sports, John was passionate about his garden and giving back to his community. The vegetables from Pop's garden made their way into many recipes around town. As a member of the Westfield Knights of Columbus, he participated in numerous fundraisers to benefit the developmentally disabled, Westfield Food Pantry, and other local charities. John positively impacted our community, and he will be truly missed.
A private service for immediate family was held following John's passing. To celebrate John's life, please consider making a donation to the Westfield Knights of Columbus or the Westfield Columbian Club, 2400 North Ave, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076, in his name.
