Jean A. Gillie Jean Agnes (Schwarz) Gillie, 88, of Westfield NJ died Sunday, August 5, 2012 at University Hospital in Newark , NJ. Visitation will be at Gray's Funeral Home in Westfield on Thursday August 9 from 2-4 and 7-9. A funeral service will be held on Friday August 10 at 11 AM at the Presbyterian Church, 140 Mountain Avenue in Westfield. A private internment ceremony for family will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield. Arrangements are by Gray's Funeral Directors, Westfield. Go to grayfuneralhomes for on line condolences. A lifelong resident of Westfield, Jean attended the St. Christopher School in Mountainside and graduated from Westfield Senior High. She then went to Hood College in Maryland and later attended the Katherine Gibbs secretarial school in NYC. She met her husband George Bruce Gillie while commuting on the train to the city. When her children started college, Jean went to work at Bassett Associates in Summit and worked there for many years in office and real estate management. She later worked in the law office of Nichols, Thomson, Peek and Phelan in Westfield. At the same time, she was the Treasurer of the Westfield Tennis Club on North Chestnut Street for sixteen years. Jean was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in Westfield. She is a Life Member of the Westfield Tennis Club and was also a past member of the Gingko Twig branch of the Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing tennis and bridge, doing the New York Times crossword puzzle and watching sports as well as spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was a financially savvy woman who also had an avid interest in politics and always kept informed about the news, business and current events. Her husband George predeceased her in 1964 after which she continued to raise her two children on her own. She was predeceased by her parents, Adolph C. and Janet D. Schwarz of Westfield. She is survived by her daughter Linda Winter and her husband Gregory of Westfield and son Bruce Gillie and his wife Dana of Scotch Plains. Her brother, Robert A. Schwarz, died earlier on March 4, 2012. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Jeffrey Gillie of Beijing China, Douglas Gillie of New Bern NC, and Christine Mahoney and her husband Matthew of Branchburg NJ. In addition, she is survived by a nephew Richard Schwarz and his wife Karen of Brielle NJ, nephew Douglas Schwarz and his wife Susan of Westfield, and niece Carol Greco and her husband Norman of Westfield. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in honor of Jean A.
