George Harbt, 88, Active Westfield Resident
It is with great sadness we share that George Max Harbt passed away at his home in Westfield, New Jersey, on Monday, February 14, 2022.
Born in Cranford to Helen and Max Harbt on March 26, 1933, George was raised in Westfield, where he graduated from Westfield High School before getting his associate degree from Keystone College. He then served in the Korean War as a medic in the U.S. Army. After returning home, he earned his bachelor's degree from Upsala College.
George's professional career included working at the International Nickel Company in NYC and the National Starch and Chemical Corporation in Bridgewater, NJ, as Director of Compensation and International Personnel Relations. During his retirement, George worked in a variety of roles for Gray Funeral Homes of Westfield and Cranford.
George volunteered in many capacities throughout his life, including the President of the Board of Trustees of The Learning Gate daycare center in Bridgewater, and as an EMT on the Westfield Rescue Squad, with whom he assisted at the World Trade Center rescue after 9/11.
George was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church in Westfield and served in many roles, including ordained Elder, Deacon, and Stephen's Minister. He participated in prison ministry and Monday Morning Craftsmen and was a longtime member of the Office and Property Commission.
George was also a member of the Westfield Historical Society and the Deutscher Club of Clark.
George is survived by his beloved partner, Janice Meister; son George and his wife, Lisette; daughter Eleanor Catalano and her husband, David; granddaughter Brittany Arminio and her husband, Michael; grandson Justin and his fiancée, Nicole Knowlton; great-granddaughter Lilyanna; daughter Helen Schmitt and her husband, Robin; grandchildren Alex, Jesse, and Audrey.
Private services with burial in Fairview Cemetery were held on February 18th. Arrangements were by Gray Funeral Directors of Westfield. Please go to www.grayfuneralhomes.com to offer condolences. Donations in honor of George may be given to the Westfield Rescue Squad or the Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
