June 13, 1928 — October 4, 2016

Franklyn Jackson Sullebarger (1928-2016)

Franklyn Jackson Sullebarger, a resident of Westfield, NJ, for over 50 years, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2016 in Cincinnati where he had lived since 2014. Born in Brooklyn on June 13, 1928, he graduated from Adelphi Academy and became an Eagle Scout in 1946 and earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Rutgers University in 1950. He married Joanne Aspinall in June 1951, and served as an Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1954. He had a successful career in the graphic arts business, but his family and volunteer activities best defined his life. He and Joanne raised three children and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. He was a beloved father and devoted community servant who always said, "Yes," when asked for his help. He was elected twice to the Westfield Town Council, was chairman of the Planning Board, president of Westfield United Fund, president of Westfield Adult School, scoutmaster for kids with Special Needs, Red Cross volunteer, Ski Patrolman, president of Youth & Family Counseling Service and trustee of Fairview Cemetery. He was a true gentleman who always put others' needs and desires above his own. In his spare time, he enjoyed golf at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield and Dorset Field Club in Dorset, Vermont. In addition to his wife Joanne, he is survived by three children—Beth (David Edmundson) of Cincinnati, Dr. J. Thompson (Sutha Kulagnanam) of Tampa, and Robert (Elizabeth Canevari) of Harvard, Massachusetts, as well as four grandchildren—Jeffrey, Melissa, William and Jane. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 22, at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, at 10 a.m. Contributions may be made to Youth & Family Counseling Service, 233 Prospect Street, Westfield, NJ 07090, or charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Gray Funeral Directors in Westfield. You may go to grayfuneralhomes.com for on line condolences.
