Dale Alexander Juntilla

September 5, 1922 — July 11, 2013

Dale A. Juntilla, 90, of Westfield, died peacefully July 11, 2013, surrounded by his family. Dale was born September 5, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was raised in a community of Finnish immigrants where the Finnish language was used in the Lutheran Church. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with an Electrical Engineering Degree and as an ROTC member he was commissioned as a lieutenant and served in the Army Signal Corps. Dale married Anita Sisson on July 29, 1944 and together they moved to Westfield, New Jersey 60 years ago. In 1946, after his military service, Dale began his 42-year career as an engineer with Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Dale was a very active member of Calvary Lutheran Church since April 4, 1954. He was always concerned with the needs of others. He was at the forefront of fund raising efforts and volunteer coordination in support of the construction of a new sanctuary, office, and education building, which was completed and dedicated in 1966. Dale was always one that could be counted on to roll up his sleeves and get involved. Whether he acted as the Council President, counted the weekly offerings, painted walls, built furniture for Sunday School classes, or served in one of his many other roles at Calvary, he performed his duty with care and passion. Always one for learning, Dale studied for two years to become a Word & Witness member, spreading the message of Jesus Christ. He also studied to become a Stephen's Minister in order to provide confidential, Christ-centered counseling to his community. This training provided the foundation for his role as one of the first members of the Calvary Lay Ministry, which provides communion and visitation to homebound and ill members of Calvary Lutheran. Dale was a dedicated musician. He was a member of the Calvary Choir for over 50 years. On May 28, 1989, Dale and the choir were one of nine choruses to participate in the sold-out performance of the Rutter Requiem at Carnegie Hall under the direction of composer John Rutter. He also was an active member of the Glee Club and The Westfield Old Guard Merrymen. Dale was a dedicated volunteer. He served Hospice for 15 years, bringing innovative ideas and leadership to the organization, and was an active ambassador for Rotary International. Dale was a dedicated family man, giving all of himself so that the Juntilla's would be happy and successful. Richard Juntilla, Dale's son, said it best...Dale Walked the Walk. He will remain in our hearts always. Dale is survived by his wife of 69 years, Anita, three children, Richard Juntilla (Jacque), Beth Juntilla and Rita Martin (Buddy), eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and his brother, James Juntilla. Memorial services were held on Sunday July 14th at Calvary Lutheran Church, Cranford. Arrangements by Gray Funeral Directors, Westfield. www.grayfuneralhomes.com. ---------------------------
