Clinton Harris Miller III

November 22, 1931 – May 3, 2020

Clinton Harris Miller III of Cranford, NJ, died on May 3, 2020, at the age of 88. He had lived with kidney disease for more than two decades, and died suddenly following several months of declining health. His wife Nancy was by his side.

He was born on November 22, 1931, in Elizabeth, NJ, the only child of Clinton H. Miller Jr. and Caroline Meininger Miller, and was raised in Linden, NJ. He attended Rutgers University where he was a brother in the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1953. He married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Eleen Hoffacker, on December 23, 1954. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2019.

Clinton and Nancy had five children: Brian Lloyd, who died several days after his birth in 1956; Susan Harris, who died in 1971 at the age of 12; Sarah Kristin Miller Gallagher (spouse Daniel) of Gaithersburg, MD; Kenneth Gregory Miller of Cranford, NJ; and Karen Emmett Miller (partner Bruce Rockwell), of New York, NY. His grandsons Andrew Mattson Gallagher and James Kieran Gallagher also survive him.

He served in the U.S. Navy as Seaman from December 1955 to December 1961.

Clint was a systems analyst/administrator in the insurance industry, first at Mutual of New York and, for the majority of his career, with American International Group (AIG). During his tenure at AIG, he served as Vice President of its Manila subsidiary, Philippine American Life and General Insurance Company (Philam Life). The family lived in the Philippines from 1966 until 1974 when they returned to Cranford, NJ. He retired from AIG.

Clint was a pillar in his church community of Trinity Cranford where he was a member for 46 years. He served on the Vestry as Warden, Junior Warden, and Treasurer, including during the church's capital campaign to fund the 2010 restoration of its historic building. He also led the Life in the Spirit Seminar at Trinity and was a Confirmation teacher and small group discussion leader. For many years, he was a welcoming presence on Sunday mornings as an Usher. In addition, he was an active member of the Full Gospel Businessman's Fellowship, serving as President of the Union County chapter.

Clint was a modest, wise, and generous man, a voracious reader, acrostic puzzle aficionado, and connoisseur of everything from fine art, theater, and classical music to Godzilla and Mothra movies. He had an abiding and sustaining faith in God, and was always a true gentleman.
