Cheryl Anne Saffer

November 11, 1948 — September 20, 2025

Cranford, NJ

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cheryl Anne Saffer, who departed this life surrounded by love and family. Born on November 11, 1948, Cheryl moved to Cranford at the age of six, a place that would remain her cherished home for most of her life.

A devoted Catholic, Cheryl lived fiercely and fearlessly—always on her own terms. She was known for her vibrant spirit, unmistakable style—complete with her signature fancy hats and Cheryl had a zest for life that touched everything she did. In her younger years, she loved to bake and was always the first one dancing whenever music was playing. A beach day with family and friends was her idea of heaven. A passionate storyteller and avid reader, Cheryl also had a sharp mind for games, especially poker, which she played enthusiastically with friends and family alike. She was a woman of deep love, great strength, and unforgettable charm.

Cheryl was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, John Saffer, and their son, John Saffer II. She leaves behind her loving daughter Christy Thompson and son-in-law Eric Thompson, her grandchildren Amanda Deo (husband Joseph Deo), Eric Jersey Thompson, and Sarah Thompson, and her great-grandchildren Finley Deo and Harper Deo. She is also survived by her sisters Gail Mortenson and Georgette Thompson (husband Conan), brothers Gustave Mortenson and Keith Mortenson, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Cheryl was a truly special soul who brought laughter, love, into the lives of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. In her honor, the family invites you to wear your most fabulous hat, raise a glass, and dance to her favorite songs. She wouldn’t have it any other way.

Cheryl’s interment will be 11AM, Thursday September 25, 2025, in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, NJ. Arrangements by Gray Funeral Home, Cranford. Please go to: www.grayfuneralhomes.com to offer condolences.
